Mr. Robert “Bobby” Edward Dowd, Jr., 73, of Bear Creek, N.C., died Sunday, March 26, 2017 in his home. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 30, at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett, N.C. from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. The funeral and graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 31, at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church in Bear Creek, N.C., with Rev. Bob Wachs presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Bobby was born on February 15, 1944, to Robert Edward Dowd, Sr. and Mary Francis Dowd. As a young man, Bobby served his country with the United States Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Saratoga. Upon fulfilling his patriotic duties, he received bachelor’s degrees from ECU, N.C. State, and a master’s degree from UNCG in Education. For many years, he taught middle school in Chatham County before taking over the family farm, where he raised poultry and cattle. He was an avid follower of sports and finance, keeping a close eye on his teams and daily stock reports. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Jo Anne Elekes Dowd, daughter Tamara Dowd Owens and husband Keith of Bear Creek, grandchildren Kent, Jackson, and Alex Owens of Bear Creek, along with a host of family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to charities for disabled veterans, or a charity of one’s choice.
