Peggy Gilliland

Peggy Ballinger Gilliland, 76, wife of Joseph C. Gilliland, died at home surrounded by her loved ones August 16, 2014 in New London, NC.

Peggy was born July 24, 1938 in Charlotte, NC, where she graduated from West Mecklinburg High School. She married her high school sweetheart Joe Gilliland, August 25, 1956. While in Charlotte, Peggy was a secretary for Horne Electric.

In 1972, Peggy and her family moved to Ramseur, NC. There she began a long career with the Randolph County School System. During her tenure there she received her accounting degree from Randolph College. She retired as Finance Director of the Randolph Country School System in 2001. While in Ramseur, she was an active member of Jordan Memorial United Methodist Church. She served in multiple roles including Director of Christian Programs and co-youth director with her husband Joe.

In 1996, Peggy and Joe relocated to Badin Shores Resort in New London, NC. There she was actively involved with the board and finance committee. One of her greatest joys was serving in her church, the Badin Shores Chapel, of which she was a founding member.

Peggy was the daughter of Louie Joseph and Dolia McKinley Ballinger. She is survived by
husband Joseph C. Gilliland, son Wesley Gilliland and his wife Dawn of Waco, TX., Daughter Sherri Schwarz-Strathmeyer and her husband Fred, of York, PA., and son Richard Gilliland of Orlando, FL. She has 8 grandchildren: Wes Frazier and wife Lindsay, Shana Schwarz, Joseph Gilliland, Adam Gilliland, Zach Schwarz, Carley McCormick, Lindsay Strathmeyer, Ryan Strathmeyer and great grandson Tabyn McCormick. She is also survived by sisters Betty Jean Muse, Dorothy Hough, and Alma Horne, and has cousins, nieces and nephews from coast to coast.

Peggy loved the Lord, her family and friends, Christmas, fireworks and adventures with Joe and her sisters. Peggy was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and friend to all. We Love You!

Visitation will be held at Badin Shores Chapel Thursday, August 21, from 6:00-8:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Service for Peggy Gilliland will be held Friday August 22, at 2:00 pm at Badin Shores Chapel. Badin Shores Chapel is located at 111 Dove Lane, New London, NC in Badin Shores Resort.
