Obituary for Martha Elizabeth Carter Maness
Martha went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Martha was born on March 23, 1964 in Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. Her family returned to Hartwell in the early 1970’s when her father retired from the U.S. Navy. She graduated from Hart County High School in 1983 and graduated from Athens Technical College as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She achieved her associate’s degree in nursing from Greenville Technical College and became a Registered Nurse with Hart County Hospital. Serving more than 20 years in the nursing field, she retired from nursing when her health would not allow her to continue.
During her time in Hartwell, she was active with the Pine Cone Garden Club, First Baptist Church and Cornerstone Baptist Church. In 1999 she met her future husband at Cornerstone Baptist Church, and they were wed in 2002. Shannon is a 30-year veteran of the Federal Government as a civilian employee with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and currently serves with Corps at B. Everett Jordan Dam & Lake in Moncure, North Carolina. Shannon and Martha also lived in Henderson, North Carolina where they were both members of Central Baptist Church, in Henderson. Martha was a labor and delivery nurse for Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson, prior to her becoming disabled. Shannon and Martha made their final move in 2016 to their current home in Sanford and are members of Beulah Baptist Church in Bennett, North Carolina, Shannon’s hometown.
Martha leaves behind her devoted husband Shannon Clay Maness of 22 years of marriage. Two brothers, Steven Carter of Hartwell, GA and Ben Carter of Hartwell, GA. Her niece, Dakota Bannister (Brandon), and great nieces Eastyn and Everlee of the home. Her niece Shellie Martin (Vincent) Great nephew Camden from Hartwell. Mother-in-law Betty Maness of Bennett. Brother-in-Law Edward Maness (Helen) of Robbins, NC. Her Uncle Brown Feltman (Sarah) of Hartwell. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 4 years Ja Ridgway in 1994 also of Hartwell, GA; her father, Lee Elmer Carter, Jr. of Hartwell; her precious mother Martha Jane Feltman Carter of Hartwell, GA, and her Father-in-law, Edward Maness of Bennett, NC.
The going home service for Martha will be on Thursday, March 20th at Beulah Baptist Church of 8454 Howard Mill Road, Bennett NC with visitation beginning at 1pm and the funeral will be at 2pm at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Neal Jackson will be officiating.
Joyce-Brady Chapel is providing service for the family. Bennett Florist is providing flowers for the service or in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Beulah Baptist Church for the spreading of the Gospel message. The family will be at the home of Ed and Helen Maness at 247 Ritter Road, Robbins, NC.
