James Barber

Mr. James Laverne Barber, 92, of Carthage, N.C., died Monday, March 27, 2017. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday, March 29, at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett, N.C. A graveside service will be held at 11 A.M. on Thursday, March 30, at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage, N.C., with Rev. Bob Yandel presiding.

James was born in Carthage, N.C. on May 10, 1924 to John Roswell Barber and Mossie Fields. A lifelong resident of Carthage, he grew tobacco and raised cattle for over 30 years. The love he had for his family was unsurpassed, but bird hunting after harvest with his treasured German Shorthaired Pointers that he bred and trained came in close second. He was a member of Glendon Independent Christian Church, and an avid listener of bluegrass music.

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Dorothy Mae Barber, grandchildren Paul James Barber and wife Kim of Cameron, Keith Barber and wife Deanna of Carthage, great grandchildren Cameron Barber of Cameron, Cassie Barber Frye and husband Zane of Greensboro, Brenna Barber of Greenville, Parker Barber of Carthage, and brother Bud Barber of Carthage. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Paul Flynn Barber and daughter-in-law Dana Charlene Barber.
