Clarence Lee “Bill” Smith, 84, of Bennett, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at FirstHealth Hospice. He was born on September 9, 1935 to Dora Wilma Kidd Smith and John Arlie Smith. He retired from NCDOT where he was a mechanic. He attended Needham’s Grove Baptist Church. He enjoyed deer hunting, baseball games, gardening and farming. He loved people and was known for his ability to fix anything. He especially adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son, Mark Smith; grandson, Charles Kevin Smith, and sister, Judy Maness.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy H. Smith; daughter: Pam Smith Caviness (Richard), Robbins; son, Stevie Lee Smith (Lisa Kennedy Smith) of Robbins; sisters: Betty Ann Murray (Nathaniel) of Siler City, Mary Ruth Powers, of Bennett, Clara Jean Hussey (Jabo), of Robbins, Carol Hicks, of Siler City; brothers: Johnny Smith (Linda) of Carthage, Jimmy Smith (Leta) of Cameron, and Ronnie Smith (Karen) of Denton; grandchildren: Matthew Richard Caviness (Emma) and Stephen Tyler Caviness; great-grandchildren; Abe, Alli, and Carra and a host of family and friends.
Due to the COVID-19 virus, a public gathering will not be held. A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held on Friday, April 24, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Needham’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. D.J. Harry and Rev. Jimmy Hussey presiding. The viewing room at Joyce-Brady Chapel will be open on Thursday, April 23, 2020 from 9:00 am-5:00 pm for friends to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Needham’s Grove Baptist Church Teen Program, 359 Needham’s Grove Rd., Seagrove, NC 27341.
